China's Factory Activity Slips Back Into Contraction in October
Share:

China's official manufacturing activity weakened in October, adding another data point to the debate over domestic demand and the outlook for global trade. The National Bureau of Statistics reported that the official purchasing managers' index fell to 49.3 from 50.1 in September. A reading below 50 indicates contraction.

The Associated Press reported that new export orders and production sub-indexes also weakened. The data suggest that factories faced softer conditions after the previous month's return to expansion, although one monthly survey does not establish a lasting trend.

China's manufacturing performance matters to U.S. companies through supply chains, commodity demand and competition in export markets. A slowdown can weigh on industrial suppliers and raw-material producers, while changes in export pricing can affect manufacturers in other countries.

Investors will watch subsequent surveys, trade figures and policy announcements for evidence of whether authorities respond with additional support. The October reading is a warning about uneven momentum, not proof that China's economy is entering a broader downturn.
