IREN’s AI Cloud Revenue Nearly Triples to $200 Million in First Quarter

Data-center operator IREN reported a sharp sequential increase in AI cloud revenue for the quarter ended September 30, highlighting how quickly some infrastructure providers are shifting toward serving artificial-intelligence workloads. The company said AI cloud revenue reached $200 million, up 182% from the previous quarter, while total quarterly revenue rose 66% to $228 million.

IREN also reported a revenue backlog of $20.3 billion and said its target of more than $4 billion in annual recurring revenue is fully contracted and funded. The company described additional customer agreements signed after the quarter, including a five-year contract priced at about $22 million per megawatt, with the customer prepaying 90% of the associated GPU capital expenditure. Such arrangements can reduce the provider’s upfront funding burden, although delivery still depends on equipment, construction and customer requirements.

The results were not uniformly positive. IREN reported a net loss of $263 million for the quarter. Its business still includes Bitcoin mining, which generated $28 million in revenue, down from $67 million in the previous quarter. The figures show both the potential scale of AI infrastructure demand and the capital-intensive nature of building and operating the facilities needed to serve it.

Investors should look beyond headline revenue growth. Backlog is not the same as cash already received, and contracted annual recurring revenue depends on projects becoming operational and customers taking delivery. Execution, power availability, GPU supply, financing costs and customer concentration will determine how much announced demand ultimately becomes profitable revenue.
