Job Openings Data and Weekly Claims Add More Clues About U.S. Hiring

The U.S. labor-market calendar is unusually busy in the first week of November. The Labor Department is scheduled to release job openings and labor turnover data on Tuesday, November 3, followed by weekly unemployment claims on Thursday and the October employment report on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, commonly known as JOLTS, helps analysts assess vacancies, hiring, quits and layoffs. A decline in openings may indicate that employers are becoming more cautious, while a rise in layoffs could suggest that weakness is spreading beyond slower hiring.

Weekly initial jobless claims provide a more frequent snapshot of layoffs, although the figures can be volatile and are often revised. Taken together, the releases can help investors distinguish a low-hiring environment from a more serious deterioration in employment.

For households and businesses, labor conditions influence income, demand and recruitment plans. Markets will compare the releases with wage growth and the upcoming payroll report when assessing the outlook for consumer spending and Federal Reserve policy.
