Nasdaq Faces Pressure as Investors Reassess the Cost of Big Tech’s AI Expansion
Share:

U.S. technology shares ended October under pressure as investors questioned whether the enormous cost of artificial-intelligence infrastructure will produce returns quickly enough. Reuters reported on October 30 that the Nasdaq 100 had fallen more than 5.8% during the month, putting more than $2 trillion in market value at risk as several major technology companies raised spending plans.

The debate is not simply whether AI demand is growing. Investors are also examining how much companies must spend on data centers, chips and power, how those investments are financed, and when they may translate into higher recurring revenue. Large capital-expenditure commitments can support future growth, but they can also weigh on near-term cash flow and increase execution risk.

The impact differs across the sector. Cloud providers may benefit from demand for computing capacity, while chip and infrastructure suppliers depend on customers continuing to expand their budgets. Companies with heavy borrowing needs may face additional pressure if financing costs rise or lenders become more selective.

For investors, useful measures include capital expenditure relative to operating cash flow, cloud revenue growth, utilization rates, margins and management guidance. A decline in a technology index does not prove that AI adoption is slowing; it shows that markets are reassessing the price and financing of that expansion.
