Nasdaq Slides as Alphabet Selloff Revives Questions About AI Spending

U.S. technology shares came under pressure on Thursday after Alphabet suffered a sharp decline following its latest results. The move renewed a difficult question for the artificial-intelligence trade: how quickly can enormous investments in data centers, chips and cloud infrastructure translate into durable revenue and cash flow?

The Associated Press reported that the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.4% on October 29, while the S&P 500 and Dow each slipped 0.3%. Alphabet’s decline weighed heavily on the technology index, although most individual stocks advanced and the Russell 2000 gained 1%.

The divergence is important. A market-cap-weighted index can fall even when a majority of listed shares rise if a handful of very large companies experience steep losses. It also shows that investors are increasingly judging AI companies on execution, returns on capital and financial discipline rather than enthusiasm about the technology alone.

Upcoming reports from other major technology companies may provide more evidence about cloud demand, capital expenditure and monetization. Investors should compare spending plans with revenue growth and management guidance, while remembering that one quarter cannot establish the long-term value of an entire technology cycle.
