Alibaba Cloud launched its first public cloud region in the Netherlands on October 29, establishing two data centers in Amsterdam as it expands its infrastructure footprint in Europe. InformationWeek reported that customers in the region can access cloud computing, storage, networking and AI services from infrastructure located within the European market.
The expansion gives businesses another provider to consider when evaluating cloud capacity, data location and artificial-intelligence workloads. Local infrastructure can matter for latency, operational resilience and regulatory requirements, although companies still need to assess each service’s security controls, contractual terms and compliance responsibilities.
Alibaba Cloud is also pursuing further European expansion, with additional capacity being considered in other markets. The move adds to competition among global cloud providers at a time when demand for AI computing is encouraging companies to invest in data centers and specialized infrastructure.
For enterprise customers, the launch is an opportunity to compare providers on more than headline pricing. Service availability, support, data residency, portability and the cost of moving existing workloads are all important parts of a cloud decision.
