OpenAI has introduced GPT-6 Cyber, a model designed to help security researchers identify, validate and fix software vulnerabilities within authorized testing environments. The company says access is initially limited to approved customers in its Daybreak Red program, which focuses on advanced security work. The restricted rollout reflects the dual-use nature of vulnerability research: the same capabilities that help defenders find weaknesses could also be misused if placed in the wrong hands.
OpenAI says its researchers used the system to identify 81 previously unknown high-severity Firefox vulnerabilities and to develop working exploits for 948 Linux kernel vulnerabilities. The company says it disclosed findings to maintainers and provided candidate patches, and that Mozilla has begun landing fixes for reported Firefox issues. These are company-reported results, and their broader significance will depend on independent review, remediation and the quality of disclosure processes.
The launch highlights a shift in cybersecurity. AI tools can accelerate code analysis, reproduce complex bugs and help developers test potential fixes. That could shorten the time between discovering a flaw and closing it. It can also increase pressure on software maintainers, who may face a larger volume of findings and must distinguish valid vulnerabilities from false positives or duplicate reports.
