Starbucks reported a 7.2% increase in global comparable coffeehouse sales in its fiscal fourth quarter, with North America comparable sales rising 7.9% and U.S. comparable sales increasing 7.7%. The company said higher average ticket and an improvement in comparable transactions contributed to the performance.
Fiscal fourth-quarter consolidated net revenue declined 4% to $9.1 billion, primarily reflecting the conversion of Starbucks retail operations in China to a licensed joint-venture model. GAAP earnings per share rose to $0.59, while non-GAAP earnings per share increased to $0.80.
The company said it opened 303 net new coffeehouses during the quarter and ended the period with 41,607 locations worldwide. It also disclosed that approximately 250 company-operated North American coffeehouses were closed in September as part of a review of stores that did not meet its experience and financial-performance expectations.
The results provide an early measure of the company's turnaround effort. Investors will watch whether comparable-sales growth can continue, whether customer traffic improves and whether the store portfolio changes strengthen margins without weakening the brand's reach.
