U.S. Services Survey to Highlight Pricing Pressure Across the Economy

The Institute for Supply Management's services-sector survey is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, and will offer another timely look at the largest part of the U.S. economy. The Associated Press reported that economists expect the survey to indicate continued modest expansion, even as businesses face rising costs.

Services activity covers a broad range of industries, including retail, transportation, finance, healthcare, hospitality and professional services. Because these businesses employ a large share of American workers, changes in new orders and hiring can provide useful context for the wider economic outlook.

The prices-paid component will be particularly important while inflation remains above the Federal Reserve's target. Higher fuel, shipping and materials costs can affect service providers, while wage expenses influence companies that rely heavily on employees.

A single survey should not be treated as proof that inflation is accelerating or that the economy is slowing. Investors will look for confirmation in official price data, employment reports and company earnings before changing their expectations.
