What the Latest Nasdaq and S&P 500 Session Says About Market Breadth
Share:

Thursday’s U.S. market session offered a useful lesson in market breadth. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.4% and the S&P 500 lost 0.3%, yet the Associated Press reported that most stocks rose and the Russell 2000 advanced 1%.

That combination suggests weakness was concentrated in some of the largest technology companies rather than spread evenly across the market. Because major indexes assign substantial weight to their biggest constituents, a sharp move in a mega-cap stock can outweigh gains among hundreds of smaller companies.

Market breadth indicators help investors understand whether an advance or decline is broad-based. Measures such as the number of advancing versus declining shares, equal-weighted index performance and small-cap participation can add context that headline index points do not provide.

Breadth is not a standalone buy or sell signal. It can improve while leadership rotates between sectors, and it can deteriorate before an index turns lower. Investors should combine it with earnings trends, credit conditions, interest rates and trading volume.

The October 29 session is a reminder to look beyond the headline S&P 500 and Nasdaq numbers when assessing the health of the U.S. stock market.
