Anthropic Tests a Personal Finance Feature in Claude for U.S. Subscribers

Anthropic is testing a personal-finance feature in Claude that lets eligible U.S. subscribers connect financial accounts and ask questions about spending, balances and upcoming bills. The beta is being offered to paid subscribers on selected plans, with Plaid providing the connection between users’ financial institutions and the application.

The feature is designed to interpret account activity in everyday language. Users may ask for spending summaries, explanations of transactions or help identifying recurring expenses. Anthropic says the connection is read-only: Claude cannot transfer funds, make payments, manage accounts or invest money. The company also says the tool is not intended to provide investment advice.

The move reflects a broader effort by AI companies to make assistants useful in practical, recurring tasks rather than limiting them to writing and research. Personal finance is an attractive category because people often need help understanding large amounts of transaction data. It is also sensitive: even read-only access can expose details about income, purchases, debts and personal routines.

Users considering such integrations should examine the permissions requested, the data retained, the role of the account-linking provider and the process for disconnecting accounts. A conversational summary can help organize information, but it should not replace checking statements or seeking qualified advice for consequential financial decisions. The feature’s long-term success will depend on whether it combines convenience with clear privacy controls and reliable explanations.
