U.S. Economy Expands at a 3.4% Annual Rate in the Third Quarter

The U.S. economy grew at a 3.4% annualized rate in the third quarter of 2026, accelerating from 2.2% in the second quarter, according to the advance estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis on October 29. The report points to continued momentum in economic activity as the country entered the final quarter of the year.

Growth was supported by increases in investment, consumer spending and government spending. A decline in exports partly offset those gains, while imports increased. The figures are an advance estimate and may be revised as more complete information becomes available.

For businesses, stronger investment and household demand can support sales, but the composition of growth matters. Companies exposed to imported inputs or overseas customers may experience different conditions from firms focused on domestic consumers. Investors will also watch how the data influence expectations for Federal Reserve policy.

The headline growth rate is encouraging, but it does not describe every household or industry. Upcoming revisions, inflation measures and labor-market reports will help show whether the pace is sustainable.
